Don’t let a true dental emergency go ignored. Here’s what to do.
It’s important to know when you need to come in right away to visit our Swartz Creek, MI, family dentist Dr. Gerald Ryan for emergency dentistry. We know that dealing with an urgent dental problem can be stressful but knowing that you have a dentist you can turn to when these issues happen can put your mind at ease. Let’s find out the common dental emergencies and how you should handle them if they happen to you or a loved one.
A toothache could be trying to tell you that you have a cavity or an infected dental pulp. The sooner a toothache is treated by our Swartz Creek, MI, dentist the better for the health and outcome of your tooth. To ease your symptoms in the meantime you may take an over-the-counter pain reliever or apply a cold compress to the affected side.
Cracked or Broken Tooth
If there are any parts of your tooth that have broken off it’s important to save those pieces. Rinse out your mouth, as well as any pieces of the tooth that you’ve collected. Just like with a toothache, you may take a pain reliever or apply a cold compress to the side of your face to reduce swelling and pain. Of course, this is another problem that needs to be addressed right away. Give us a call.
Partially Dislodged Tooth
Do not try and move your tooth back into the proper position. The best thing you can do is come into our office so we can handle this issue.
Collect the tooth and always handle it by the crown (never the roots). Rinse the tooth with warm water to remove any dirt or debris on it. Then try to place the tooth back in the socket. Don’t force it. If the tooth won’t go back into the socket then place it in a container of milk or water. From there, it’s important that you come in immediately for treatment. Time is crucial when it comes to saving a tooth. If you visit us within 30 minutes to one hour after the injury we may be able to save the tooth.
